Theresienstadt: The Model Ghetto
Located in Czechoslovakia, Theresienstadt or Terezín was created by Hilter as a "model camp" to fool the outside world into thinking that the Jews were being treated very well. Many of the Jews sent here were prominent artists and musicians, which created a particularly rich cultural life in this ghetto. The Nazis however saw this as a great propaganda opportunity, and used things like the performances of the children's opera Brundibár as ways to fool visitors like the International Red Cross. They even made a propaganda film demonstrating the "wonderful conditions" at Theresienstadt. The “beautification of the city” (Stadtverschönerung) had to be ordered before filming the documentary so it would appear as a model Jewish settlement to the rest of the world.
